The fog burns off early, the beach towns hum with energy, and the entire region gears up for its unofficial start of summer: Opening Day at the Del Mar Racetrack. Del Mar Opening Day — Friday, July 17
The 87th summer racing season kicks off on Friday, July 17, and Opening Day remains San Diego's single biggest social event of the year. Gates open at 11:30 a.m., with the first post at 2 p.m., and the season runs Thursdays through Sundays all the way to Labor Day, September 7.
The centerpiece, as always, is the famous Opening Day Hats Contest in the Plaza de Mexico. Bring your boldest fascinator, most extravagant florals, or wittiest racing-themed creation — more than $5,000 in prizes are awarded across categories, including Most Glamorous, Best Fascinator, Best Flowers, and Best Racing Theme, with winners announced after the sixth race.

The Party presented by Pacifico returns as the high-energy heart of Opening Day, with live music, sun, and trackside racing action.
The Seabiscuit Society is brand new for 2026 and billed as the most luxurious way to experience Opening Day — a ticketed VIP party in the Seabiscuit Skyroom on the Grandstand's sixth floor, with ocean views, a hosted bar, buffet, and valet parking.
The Celebrity Grill and Champions' Terrace offer premium experiences overlooking the paddock, each with a complimentary buffet and hosted bar.
The After Pony Party at Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa keeps the celebration going after the final race — the official Opening Day after-party, hosted at one of Rancho Santa Fe's most beautiful settings.
A local tip: skip the parking hassle entirely. The Pony Express shuttle runs between the Solana Beach Coaster station and the track, and post-race crowds spill into the Del Mar village afterward — plan a dinner reservation along Camino del Mar and make a full evening of it.
Racing continues all month, with the Tacos & Tequila trackside festival on Saturday, July 18 and the $400,000 Bing Crosby Stakes on Saturday, July 25 as highlights.
